Famous People Painting

When you have nothing better to do, have a look at http://cliptank.com/PeopleofInfluencePainting.htm and see how many people you can identify in this painting of famous people - WITHOUT CHEATING.

There are a few versions on the internet, but this one is preferred because the name of each person pops up when the mouse hovers over them Including the animals). So don't cheat. Try to identify each person before looking at their name.

This was painted by three Chinese artists so there is an obvious Asian influence in the choice of subjects. Even so, you should recognise most of them. But there are errors in some of the names. Can you find any?

GodMode

Have you ever struggled to find that elusive option in Control Panel? Do you know how many ways your computer can be customised? All such questions can be answered by Godmode which essentially unlocks a centralized table of contents for all of Windows' far-flung features and customization options, drawing all your options together into a single interface. The best part is that it is easy to install and not complicated to use.

Proceed as follows to create a Godmode folder on your desktop:

Godmode

Step 1: Right-click on your desktop and make a new folder. For the folder's name, paste the following:  GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}   Do not forget to insert the period after "GodMode." You can also alter the name of the folder (even though the hack is called GodMode). To do so, simply alter the "GodMode" part of the string to the name you want.

Step 2: Once you have inserted the string, hit Enter and the icon will resemble the Control Panel.

Step 3: Open the folder to see the available customization options/configuration settings at your disposal. It is pretty easy to shift around GodMode on your system the same manner in which you can shift any traditional folder.

The article at https://tinyurl.com/yal7lej5 provides a good description of God Mode and how to enable it in Windows 7 to 10.

Web Turns 30

12 March 2019 marks the 30th anniversary of the invention of the World Wide Web by Tim Berners-Lee. In1989, Tim Berners-Lee was working at the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Switzerland and saw an opportunity to join hypertext with the internet and records his invention as follows:

"I just had to take the hypertext idea and connect it to the Transmission Control Protocol and domain name system ideas and - ta-da! - the World Wide Web ... Creating the web was really an act of desperation, because the situation without it was very difficult when I was working at CERN later. Most of the technology involved in the web, like the hypertext, like the internet and multifont text objects had all been designed already. I just had to put them together. It was a step of generalising, going to a higher level of abstraction, thinking about all the documentation systems out there as being possibly part of a larger imaginary documentation system."

What is Flight Mode?

Airplane mode, aeroplane mode, flight mode, offline mode, or standalone mode is a setting available on many smartphones, portable computers, and other electronic devices that, when activated, suspends radio-frequency signal transmission by the device, thereby disabling Bluetooth, telephony, and Wi-Fi. GPS may or may not be disabled, because it does not involve transmitting radio waves.

The name comes from the prohibition by most airlines of using equipment transmitting radio-frequency signal while in flight; when airplane mode is turned ON, devices are prevented from transmitting.

Google Arts & Culture

The Google Arts & Culture platform hosts millions of artifacts and pieces of art, ranging from prehistory to the contemporary, shared by museums across the world. But the prospect of exploring all that art can be daunting. To make it easier, Google dreamt up a fun solution: connect people to art by way of a fundamental artistic pursuit, the search for the self ... or, in this case, the selfie.

They created an experiment that matches your selfie with art from the collections of museums on Google Arts & Culture, and since its launch, people have taken more than 30 million selfies. Even if your art look-alike is a surprise, it is hoped that you discover something new in the process. (By the way, Google doesn't use your selfie for anything else and only keeps it for the time it takes to search for matches.)

Simply download the Google Arts & Culture for your portable device from either the Apple or Android App Store then use the app to take a selfie to discover who you might look like in the art world.

Specify Your Own Font Size

Font Size

Most Windows applications specify font sizes in points, a unit of measurement typically used in typesetting. There are 72 points per inch.

The font size for text is usually selected from a drop-down list of preset options.

However, when the number in the font size box is highlighted, the keyboard can be used to enter any font size up to 400 points or more (including fractional point sizes) depending on the application.

Duck Duck Go

A search engine is a program that searches for and identifies items in a database that correspond to keywords specified by the user and used especially for finding particular sites on the World Wide Web.

There are many search engines available for searching the web. Google and Bing are currently the most popular ones.

Both Google and Bing collect personal data, including location and search history to personalise your search experience (eg: present ads that they think will be more relevant to you).

DuckDuckGo, on the other hand, is a search engine that does not collect personal data. While it may not have all the features of the more popular search engines, if you are concerned about your privacy, you may feel more comfortable using DuckDuckGo to search the web.

See https://tinyurl.com/yy3yseu8 for a comparison of Google, Bing and DuckDuckGo.

What is the Menu Key?

The Menu key, also known as the Application key, is a key found on some Windows-oriented keyboards. This key is usually on the bottom-right of the keyboard, next to the Ctrl key, but it can be placed in a different location by keyboard manufacturers. It is usually depicted as a cursor hovering above a menu.

Menu Key

The primary function of this key is to launch a context menu with the keyboard rather than by clicking the right mouse button. This can be useful if a mouse or similar device is not available, or when the right mouse button is not present.

The Menu key is sometimes omitted in the interest of space, particularly on portable and laptop keyboards. In this case, some keyboards include a Menu function key that can be activated in combination with the Function (Fn) key.

The context menu is a menu that pops up when you right-click. The menu that you see, if any, is dependent on the context and function of the area that you right-clicked. When you use the Menu key, the context menu is shown for the area of the screen that your cursor is over at the point when the key is pressed.

Free-to-Use Images

There are many websites that offer royalty-free images you can download to create greeting cards, posters and websites, etc. However, finding those sites are can be a challenge.

A good alternative is to use Google's image search feature to find pictures on the subject you are looking for and then apply filtering to display only royalty-free images, as follows:

  • At the Google home page select Images (top right corner)
  • Enter the subject of the images you are looking for
  • When images are displayed, click on Tools near the top of the page, then click on "Usage Rights"
  • Select an appropriate option (most likely "Labeled for reuse" or "Labeled for noncommercial reuse") to filter out the images that are not royalty-free

Customise your Gmail Address

Did you know you can customize your Gmail address and make it easier to read? It can also help you track who sends you messages.

You can place a period (.) between any of the characters in your email address username. Gmail doesn't acknowledge it as a character in the username; it completely ignores it. It can be helpful to use this character in long, multiple-word email addresses. It separates the string of characters and makes the address easier to read. For example, an email address of myfullname@gmail.com can be written as my.full.name@gmail.com.

You can also use a plus sign (+) sign to append any number of words or numbers to the end of your username. Just like the period, Gmail ignores the plus sign and anything that follows it so you can customize and create an endless supply of email addresses.

This trick is especially great for newsletters and websites that require an email address to sign up because you can add the site name to help organize your inbox. For example, if you wanted to sign up for the How-To Geek newsletter, an address of firstname+howtogeek@gmail.com will be recognised by Gmail as firstname@gmail.com. The newsletter still comes to your inbox as it normally would, but it appears to have been sent to firstname+howtogeek@gmail.com.

Now comes the fun part - filtering the custom emails you used to sign up for different newsletters or subscriptions to automatically send them to a dedicated folder instead of the Inbox. See https://tinyurl.com/y4plk267 for details.
